Recruiting PhD Candidate in Mixed-Ability Gaming

Update: Applications closed on Friday 13 June

I’m currently recruiting a PhD candidate to work with me! I’m offering a PhD position with a scholarship to conduct research on mixed-ability gaming at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. This recruitment is open to both domestic and international candidates.

This research seeks to understand how gamers with and without disabilities (i.e. mixed-ability gamers) interact on video games. This project may involve designing and implementing games or game plug ins, using mixed research methods to understand user experience, and engaging with the disability community to understand their perspectives toward social aspects of video games.

A strong technical background is not a must. Candidates with a strong social research background are welcome to apply.

Candidates with lived experience of disability and/or with strong connections to the disability community are highly encouraged to apply.

This project is intentionally open-ended to give the successful candidate agency over it.

How to apply:

Applicants should contact me via ronny.andrade.parra@rmit.edu.au with the following information to discuss eligibility:

  • A research statement of 1 or 2 pages (excluding references) where the potential candidate outlines the research problem and question(s) to be studied, proposed methods, and a brief reference list. The proposal must be aligned with the topic of Mixed-ability gaming.
  • An academic CV that includes any publications/awards and the contact details of two referees.
  • A copy of electronic academic transcripts.
  • A cover letter explaining the applicant’s suitability for the project.

International students may be required to provide proof of English when formally applying to RMIT University.

The application process

  • March to early June: Applications are received.
  • Mid-June: Applicants are short listed and interviews are arranged with shortlisted applicants.
  • Late June to Mid-July: interviews are conducted.
