Zero (automatically detected) accessibility errors on RMIT University’s homepage

RMIT University homepage with the WAVE plug in running and showing zero accessibility errors

I successfully delivered a series of updates that resulted in zero accessibility errors on the homepage for RMIT University, according to the WAVE automated testing tool, showcasing our commitment to creating an inclusive digital environment. This achievement was particularly significant as it involved extensive collaboration with a diverse range of stakeholders, ensuring that all perspectives were considered.

Despite the complexity of coordinating with multiple stakeholders, the root cause of the accessibility errors was relatively straightforward. The automated testing tool had flagged numerous issues, but upon closer inspection, these errors stemmed from simple coding oversights. By addressing these erroneous coding practices, we were able to eliminate all accessibility errors efficiently.

The project involved meticulous code reviews and the implementation of best practices to rectify issues such as improper use of HTML elements, missing alt text for images, and inadequate ARIA labels. By correcting these minor yet impactful errors, we significantly enhanced the accessibility of RMIT University’s homepage. This not only improved the user experience for individuals with disabilities but also set a new standard for accessibility across the university’s digital platforms. The success of this project underscores the importance of attention to detail and the value of automated testing tools in maintaining high accessibility standards.
